Moffitt Report Pearls 3/7: Myoclonus and Toxidromes

Drugs causing myoclonus: there is a HUGE list for causes of myoclonus if you search on UpToDate. The list is a bit more manageable if you narrow it down to just meds and toxins as we were discussing this AM:

  • Drugs
    • Levodopa
    • Psychiatric medications (eg, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, lithium)
    • Antibiotics (eg, penicillins, cephalosporins, quinolones)
    • Narcotics
    • Anticonvulsants
    • Anesthetics
    • Contrast media
    • Cardiac medications (eg, calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmic agents)
    • Drug withdrawal from certain agents (eg, sedatives)
  • Toxins
    • Bismuth
    • Heavy metals
    • Methyl bromide
    • Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)

Drug syndromes: very helpful doodle from sketchymedicine.com of the various toxidromes and their effects. Thanks to Jake Natalini for pointing it out! Check out the full post here.
